Does Starbucks have Boba? I will be answering that question and much more in this article.
Boba tea has been all the rage in the last few years.
My first introduction to the drink was in 2019 and I have loved Boba ever since.
I wanted to touch on this subject because I actually made the mistake of trying to order a boba tea at starbucks the other day.
It was the first time Starbucks couldn’t deliver on a drink order so I just had to get to the bottom of why they haven’t jumped on this trend yet.
Does Starbucks Have Boba?
So does Starbucks have boba tea… Well oddly enough Starbucks does not offer boba tea on their menu in 2023.
While they have an extensive range of beverages, from coffees to teas and everything in between, boba tea isn’t one of them.
This might come as a surprise to many, especially given the popularity of boba tea worldwide. But why is this the case?
Why Does Starbucks Not Have Boba/Bubble Tea On Their Menu?
There are a couple reasons why Starbucks does not offer boba tea yet.
The first reason is that Starbucks mainly identifies as a coffee shop that focuses on coffee drinks, not tea.
Now I think that this is only temporary since Starbucks will find a way around this sometime soon. As I will cover later on.
The second reason has to do with the cost. Making bubble tea can be quite expensive.
Starbucks would need to invest not only in the machines but also in the training of their baristas.
So for now Starbucks is focusing on the customizable coffee drink market.
Will Starbucks Make Boba In The Future?
While Starbucks might not have traditional boba tea, they aren’t entirely missing out on the boba trend.
In 2022, there were reports of Starbucks testing the waters with its own version of bubble tea.
Accordin to sites like helloyummy starbucks is planning to release a boba tea soon, but nothing is confirmed.
They introduced beverages featuring “coffee-popping pearls”, a unique twist to the regular boba pearls we know and love.
Moreover, in early 2022, Starbucks capitalized on the boba drink trend by introducing a Starbucks Boba Coffee.
This tells me that while they might not have the classic boba milk tea in mind, they are experimenting with boba-inspired beverages.
Boba Tea Substitutes at Starbucks
While Starbucks does not offer the traditional Boba Tea, there are similar drinks that might at least offer a similar taste.
So here is how to order boba at Starbucks (or as close as you are gonna get):
The small coffee pearls are infused with coffee and give the closest thing to boba tea you will find. Not all Starbucks shops carry this on the menu though so be sure to look up where to find it.
Raspberry Milk Tea:
One of the most popular drinks at Starbucks, the raspberry milk tea might not have the chewy texture you are looking for but it definitely has the taste. If you love Raspberyy this is a must.
Iced Chai Tea:
Made with a mix of black tea, cinnamon, cardamom and more, the Iced Chai Tea gives you a delicious, creamy Starbucks alternative to Boba.
Iced Vanilla Chai Tea Latte:
If you want a sweeter version of the Iced Chai Tea the added vanilla syrup definitely does the job. The taste of the iced vanilla chai tea latte is closer to the sweeter Bubble teas out there.
How To Make Boba At Home
So you can’t order bubble / boba milk tea at Starbucks… But can you make boba at home?
Yes, making boba at home is easy, and here’s how to do it:
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Tapioca pearls (boba) – 1/2 cup per serving (or make your own at home)
- Tea bags (oolong or black tea) – 1 to 2 per serving
- Brown sugar – 1/2 cup
- Water – 2 1/2 cups separated
- Milk or half-and-half – 2-3 tablespoons per serving
- Ice cubes
Step-by-Step Guide to Making Boba Tea
Prepare the Tapioca Pearls (Boba):
Boil a large pot of water and add the uncooked boba tapioca pearls. Cook them until they become soft and chewy.
Once cooked, drain the water and let the pearls cool.
Make the Tea:
In a separate pot, boil 4 cups of water. Add the tea bags and let them steep for about 10-15 minutes.
Remove the tea bags and set the tea aside to cool.
Prepare the Brown Sugar Syrup:
In a saucepan, combine the brown sugar with 1/2 cup of water. Stir the mixture over heat until the sugar dissolves completely.
This syrup will sweeten your boba tea and give it a rich flavor.
Assemble the Boba Tea:
Divide the cooked tapioca pearls into large glasses. Add a few ice cubes to each glass. Pour the tea into each glass, followed by the brown sugar syrup. Add milk or half-and-half and mix well.
Your homemade boba tea is ready to be enjoyed! You can adjust the sweetness and milkiness according to your preference.
Making boba tea at home is not only fun but also allows you to customize the drink to your liking.
Whether you prefer it sweeter, milkier, or with different flavors, the possibilities are endless.
So, the next time you crave a refreshing boba tea, you know how to whip one up in the comfort of your home!
How to Make Tapioca Pearls At Home
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Tapioca starch – 1 cup
- Water – 1/2 cup
- Brown sugar or white sugar – 1/2 cup
- Optional: Activated charcoal or food coloring for color
Step-by-Step Guide to Making Tapioca Pearls
Prepare The Sugar Syrup:
In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Heat the mixture over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely. This syrup will give the pearls their sweet taste and shiny appearance.
Mix The Ingredients:
In a mixing bowl, add the tapioca starch. If you’re using activated charcoal or food coloring, add it now for color. Slowly pour in the boiling hot water and mix until a dough forms.
Shape The Pearls:
Once the dough is ready, roll it into small balls. The size of the balls can vary based on your preference, but they are typically around the size of marbles.
Cook The Pearls:
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the shaped tapioca pearls to the boiling water. Cook them until they float to the surface and become soft and chewy.
Rinse And Soak:
Once cooked, drain the pearls and rinse them under cold water. Transfer them to a bowl and pour the prepared sugar syrup over them. Let them soak for about 30 minutes to an hour.
As you probably know, the opening hours for Starbucks shops vary wildly but tend to be 7 days a week from 11 am at the latest to 6 pm at the earliest.
As you can see my research took me a bit further into the boba tea rabbit hole than expected but I enjoyed researching this subject.
Even though the final answer to “does Starbucks have boba?” is no you still have a lot of options.
You can order similar drinks, you can make your own drinks and you can even make your own tapioca pearls!
All in all there are a few ways to bandage the boba shaped hole in our hearts while waiting for Starbucks to release their own boba drink.
